The History and Meaning of Jewish Liturgy

November 19 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

The siddur is the great anthology of Judaism, a living document that includes passages from each era of Jewish history. Our class will explore the meaning and history of Jewish liturgies across time and communities. We will: explore how the themes of Creation-Revelation-Redemption organize individual prayers and larger ritual cycles; explain the commonalities among the Amidah, Sheva Berachot, Birkat HaMazon and the blessings after the haftorah; examine how printing and today the computer have impacted the siddur. We will also look at diverse contemporary English commentaries and introductions to Jewish prayer. Join Rabbi Leonard Gordon, an experienced rabbi and educator, who teaches in the Me’Ah program at Hebrew College.

Session dates: Oct. 22, 29, Nov. 5, 12, 19, Dec. 3

The cost is $125 per person.

To register, please send payment to Minyan Ma’or Learning Coordinator Sandy Remz by Venmo to @Sanford-Remz
