About Shelley Trachtenberg

Shelley Kleiman Trachtenberg is a licensed Israel Tour Guide Educator and guide to Jewish Heritage Sites in Poland, as well as a trained guide at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem. She has experience guiding a wide range of groups, from congregational and interfaith to families, schol-ars, and journalists to religious and lay leaders. An affirmed his-tory and literature buff, whilst guiding, she integrates personal stories, texts, poetry and music. Her passion goes beyond “touring” sites; she aims to create a dynamic experience, encouraging dialogue and raising questions that touch upon issues of identity–historical, national, cultural and personal.

Shelley often finds herself inspired by the places she visits–and re-visits– and especially by the people with whom she shares the journey.

Before taking to the “field” over a decade ago, Shelley worked as a freelance writer and editor, as well as an English language instructor. She has a BA and MA in English and American Literature from the City College of New York and Harvard University. Born and bred in Manhattan, Shelley moved to Israel in 1983 with her husband, Josh and they live in the Jerusalem area. They have four children, three of whom live in Israel and one in New York. When not guiding, Shelley enjoys reading, spinning and, of course, traveling.
