An Eternal Covenant: People and Land

In this moment of Jewish vulnerability, we need to return to basic assumptions and values to ground us. God’s covenant with the Jewish people is eternal, so says the Torah and everything that follows. What is the nature of the relationship between that people and the land promised to Avraham? Is that connection similarly eternal? Affected by the passage of time or historical context? When we are blessed to live in a time when the Jewish people have returned to their ancient homeland, are we picking up the story where it left off during exile? Or are we writing a new chapter? We will endeavor to ground our answers to these questions in close readings of Tanakh, early rabbinic sources, and one particularly important passage in the Talmud Yerushalmi.
